what to expect
Working with a death doula, one gentle step at a time
Reaching out to a death doula is probably something you've never done before. It's natural to have questions about what working together looks like.
Whether you're planning ahead after a diagnosis, supporting someone you love, or navigating a difficult transition, my goal is to make the process feel clear, comfortable, and centered around your needs.
Create a Personalized Plan
If you decide you'd like to move forward, we'll schedule a Client Intake Meeting. This meeting typically lasts between one and three hours and can include anyone you'd like to be part of the conversation, such as family members or other members of your circle of support.
During our time together, I'll learn more about your story, your values, and what matters most to you. We'll discuss your goals, identify which services will be most helpful, and create a personalized plan that reflects your unique needs. Together, we'll determine how often you'd like to meet and the level of support that feels right for you.
We'll also complete the necessary paperwork, including a Client Agreement, liability waiver, and deposit, so that we can officially begin working together. Before we finish, we'll schedule our next session.
No two journeys are the same. Some people want support with advance planning after a diagnosis. Others need guidance during caregiving, companionship near the end of life, or bereavement support after the death of someone they love.
Our work together will evolve as your needs change. Sessions may include education, practical planning, emotional support, family meetings, resource referrals, legacy work, vigil planning, or simply having a calm, compassionate person to walk alongside you.
You don't have to figure everything out at once. We'll take it one step at a time.

What About Timing?
There is no 'right' time to begin working with a death doula. Some people reach out soon after receiving a serious diagnosis. Beginning earlier gives us the opportunity to build a relationship over time, explore your wishes thoughtfully, and make plans at a comfortable pace. In these situations, we might meet weekly, monthly, or whenever you need support.
As circumstances change and the end of life draws nearer, many people choose to meet more frequently. During this time, I can provide additional guidance, practical support, and a steady presence for both you and those who care about you.
Whether we work together over many months or only a short time, my role is to meet you where you are and provide the support you need, when you need it most. You don't have to know exactly what you need before reaching out. We'll begin with a conversation and take it one step at a time.
